Born in London, Michael studied in the UK and USA at the University of Leeds and the
University of North Texas College of Music. He was awarded the Dixon scholarship for the MA in Vocal Studies at York, graduating with distinction. After a period living and working in France, he contined postgraduate studies with Adrian Thompson at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and is also an alumnus of the Britten-Pears Young Artists programme at Aldeburgh.
As a solo, chorus, consort and session singer he has worked frequently with groups such as
the Academy of Ancient Music, London Voices, Monteverdi Choir and Dunedin Consort, as well as with leading European groups including Le Concert d’Astrée, Les Eléments, Stradivaria, Ensemble Matheus and Le Cercle d’Harmonie. Concert and opera work has taken him to most of the major venues in the UK and the major opera houses and concert halls of Europe.
A strong exponent of original music, Michael founded original flamenco/Spanish song project Poniente, and writes and arranges for his original English song band, Quilta. He is also a founder member of Dowland Works with Dame Emma Kirkby, with whom her performs and coaches,
also coaching Lute Song courses with Jacob Heringman at Benslow Music. In the studio he frequently sings on soundtracks for major film and commercial releases. Also in demand as a vocal coach and conductor, Michael is Visiting Lecturer of Singing at the University of Southampton and has trained and inspired vocal groups and choruses of all shapes and sizes.
A passionate communicator and community activist with a deep belief in the power of music to inspire collaboration and compassion, in summer 2016, Michael founded Common and Kind,
writing the international single Human Kind and bringing together leading artists from across the musical spectrum with massed parternships between groups of all ages and backgrounds in workshops and concerts in 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019 and online in 2020.
